Does 2.9.2 include the security fix?

I do NOT have a prompt on my admin page in my blog to upgrade, but I received an email from my host stating that I needed to upgrade my version. I check into my control panel to confirm that I have 2.9.2 (installed April 27, 2010) but there is also this little button that says “download now.” I called to confirm that I needed to upgrade, they said “yes, upgrade. It’s a security fix.” Does WordPress create upgrades with the same name?

    Thanks in advance!

WordPress v2.9.2 is the current, stable, and secure version. Most hosting providers can’t tell what version of WordPress you’re using without going out of their way to investigate. If your hosting provider has sent out a mass-email asking you to upgrade to the current version, they just want to make sure that you’re using it.

Thank you for your extremely prompt response!

Is it safest for me to depend on the admin section in my blog for notification about updates/upgrades?

Yes, in most cases, the admin interface will notify you of an update as soon as it’s released. However, subscribing to the development blog will also ensure that you are notified of updates in case the automated system fails for some reason.
