installation ok but only 404 (7 posts)

I tried to install wordpress on my server (acheta.de/wp). The installation worked. The databases were created and the site is there but the standard entry (created by wp itself with the installation) is not shown. There's only a 404. I haven't changed any of the files except the config.php, i.e. I'm not using any rewrites etc.

Now, if you type in manually acheta.de/wp/index.php i.e. you add the index.php manually, the entry is shown. (siteurl and home don't have a trailing slash, I checked this.)

Additionally all links lead to a 404 page, too. Even if I manually type in the index.php.

I checked the forum but couldn't find a solution. As I'm not using any rewrites (I assume this as I didn't change anything the standard wp-files) can it have anything to do with the .htaccess-file at all? I uploaded wp several times to see if there was an upload error, but I received the same 404 page again and again.

    any ideas?
    thanks in advance.

Try changing to the Classic theme.

cool, it works with the classic theme. why is that? or better why isn't it working with the default theme?

    No idea :)

This has cropped up a couple of times only, so where to nail it down to could well not be worth the hassle.

If Classic works you should be fine with others.

damn, there's always something, isn't there?

but thanks a lot for this extremely quick help.
I'm just changing from pMachine to wordpress and was really surprised how easy it was to transfer the db-entries. Now seeing this fast response (not to mention the features and thousands of plugins for wordpress) I think it is the right choice to do so.
    again: thanks a lot.

    ok, another try:
The default theme works fine, if I disable the theme's 404.php.

    Any idea why that is?
