Support » Fixing WordPress » What’s the difference between a browser 404 error and one wrapped in my theme?

  • I have been having seemingly spontaneous problems with my site all of a sudden returning 404 errors on every single post. I can’t figure out what is triggering it. To fix it I change the permalinks to the default and then back again and then everything is fine. I’m thinking it has to do with my htaccess file but I think I could better diagnose the issue if I better understood what the difference between getting a total 404 error where nothing is found and getting a 404 error that just shows up where the post should be in my theme. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

They’re actually both legitimate 404 error pages that mean nothing more than “file not found”. More than likely, “a 404 error that just shows up where the post should be in my theme” would be your theme’s custom 404 error page, which means that the file (or link) you were looking for was within the WordPress directory. Similarly, the plain 404 error probably means that the file (or link) you were looking for was outside of the WordPress directory
