Is there really no alternative? It seems like Flash is on the way out unless Adobe can appease Apple. I hope an alternative slideshow for NextGEN is in the works.

Apple is just one fish in the sea, and a very monopolistic and controlling one at that. Andriod the big competitor to IPhone and other players are still out there… and have you ever heard of the computer?
okay that was a bit tongue in cheek, but its important to not get obsessed with Apple.

It’s easy to say that apple only has a small market and not to worry about it, or not get obsessed… but the fact is, people do use iphones and ipads – therefore if you want to share your galleries with people who use these products (huge portion of the creative community) you need a non-flash method.
I’m greatly relieved to read alex’ post above – i’ve been pulling my hair out about this for a few weeks now. So many people have complained to me that they can’t access my site on the go – especially my clients.

I’m in the same boat here. Whether Flash stays or goes, I don’t really care. But since the iPad is my main device when meeting clients, I can’t have flash on my site not showing up.
I’ve spent about 9 hours now looking for a clean, elegant NON-flash gallery/slideshow. And I’m beginning to conclude it simply doesn’t exist. And I have no idea how to make one.
jQuery cycle is a great option, having used it myself for other projects, and if you look at the nextgen entry in Google Code you will see that it is currently in the works to be added.

It’s nice to hear Alex is working on a non-flash alternative.
In the meantime, is there an answer to the second part of shanafourde’s question:
Alternatively, is there a way to have a different still image for each slide show come up when Flash is not installed?
So most users can see the JV Rotator slideshow, but those on iphone or ipad etc. may be served up a static image?
