excerpt question

Is there any way to get the blank line removed at the end of the_excerpt? I’ve got the_excerpt & a link to the_permalink posted in the same line, yet it outputs them in two separate paragraphs. I’d really like to have that permalink look like it’s the end of the article text so that it’s not overlooked. Have I made a simple error or do I need to edit the_excerpt function somehow?
