Deprecated: Assigning the return value

    This is a desperate call for help!

    A year ago, I set up a WordPress installation for our school. The IT department installed it, but they also added so many restrictions, so I couldn’t even upgrade (for security reasons!!!). I do, however, have FTP access to the files. Yesterday our school servers went down (I heard it was a cyber attack) and nothing was accessible for hours. When I tried to access our blog today I got these errors (http://iep.pratt.edu)

    Any help would be greatly appreciated. Our teacher put so much work on developing the blog (lesson plans, resources…etc) and now everything is gone and IT is not willing to help with this!

    I heard it was a cyber attack

    I think it was far more likely a server PHP upgrade that initially went wrong judging by the errors on your site.

    Step 1:
    reset your plugins folder by FTP

    Step 2: Use FTP to rename your current theme’s folder to force the activation of the default theme.

    Step 3. This is the tricky part – you need to make a backup of your current database. You’ll need access to phpMyAdmin to do this.

    Step 4. See if you can now login to the site.

    If all goes well, I’d strongly suggest that you leave all plugins & themes alone for now. Instead, focus in upgrading the site manually to 2.9.2 via a 2-step upgrade process: 2.5.1 -> 2.7 -> 2.9.2

    Thank you so much esmi. I completed steps 1 and 2, and now I can see part of the index page, but not the admin section. I’m hoping our IT department will be kind enough to do the manual upgrade. Maybe it will solve this problem.

    I still get the “Deprecated” error messages after resetting the plugin folder and renaming the current theme folder.

    Do I have to manually go into one of the files and switch back to the default theme? If that’s the case, which file?

    I’m also getting this error:
