Pages are hierarchical, each can be the child of another, Post are not their is no tree structure or relationship between posts.
Its basically as simple as that, do you want you custom post types to have a tree structure/relationship like Pages or just flat like post.
How would you use that feature? What changes in the interface if you enable “hierarchical”?
pages & categories are hierarchical.
posts & tags are not hierarchical.
means pages & categories can have parent, butposts & tags cant. UI will depends on the hierarchical.
ok, great explanation but now how exactly do you assign custom post types to another one, i.e. I created the custom post type “recipe” and made it hierarchical. Now I want to create i.e. “starters” “soups” “desserts” underneath recipes – how would I do that?

I would have to i.e. create a recipe called “soups” then create another one called i.e. “tomato soup” and assign “soups” as its parent 🙁 that is not what I was looking for…
What is the best way to do this using my recipes example? How to best organize recipes into “categories” so that one can browse by types of food and then maybe by types of ingredients? i.e. I am assigning ingredients (custom taxonomy) to each recipe but I’d like the ingredients to be hierarchical too, so I can assign some of them to the parent “vegetarian” and some to i.e. “meaty”….
I’d be really happy if someone can point out the best way to do this…
Why not do ingredients as tags?
Since you mention custom taxes, what about these categories:
Meal Type: soup, salad, entree, appetizer
Food Type: meaty, veggie, fishy, cheesy
And then under the post tags, you just list the MAIN ingredients.
So Tomato soup has two categories:
Meal Type: soup
Food Type: veggie
And then whatever tags you need: tomato, cilantro, etc etc

and taking a step back from all this custom stuff and go with the post-tags for ingredients?
If so I can also use nothing custom at all, stick with simple posts, categories and tags, right?
still trying to figure out if the addition of recipes to my blog warrants the introduction of custom post types and taxonomies…

I think I will try and emulate that structure, now how to do that?
I am especially fond of that breadcrumb navigation and I might even go back to normal posts and categories for this as I am not sure how easy it will be to create a breadcrumb path made of custom taxonomies/posts…
They’re not using WordPress, for one, so … a little harder to reproduce, and it’s a bit … eh.
If you use custom taxonomies, then it works like normal posts, by the way.
The problem is that no matter what, that is a LOT of tags and cats. You have to come up with a way that makes sense, TO YOU, to organize it. Categories are for BIG groups. Tags are for small ones.
