3.6 image post format image URL

I want to be able to access the file URL for image in the image post format so that I can have a clickable link for the image which takes me to the file url. There are no “ATTACHMENT DISPLAY SETTINGS” available for the image post format, so I tried setting image_default_link_type in options.php to “file”, but that’s doing nothing.

I use structured-post-formats for image post format and I use <?php the_post_format_image(); ?> to output the image itself. Tricks for getting the featured image URL via functions.php hacks don’t seem to work (is the image post format not using a featured image?).
