Support » Fixing WordPress » feedburner, podcasting, and bit torrent

  • Hi,

    I have a podcast already up and running at blogger and now I’m looking to move to my own hosting provider and domain name. I just finished installing the latest version of wordpress and I’m ready to start looking at importing my blogger posts and comments.

    The problem, though, is that I’m also investigating using torrent to distribute the enclosures. Ideally, I’d like to have three separate feeds: a direct download feed, a torrent feed, and a generic blog feed for regular RSS aggregators.

    I can see how I can easily do this by using categories and categories-specific feeds. It just means posting the same entry in different categories with links to the two different files and let feedburner create the enclosure and maintain the feed. This gives me the added advantage of not breaking the feed my existing subscribers are using.

    The problem I’m running up against is this: is there anyway to control which categories show up on the main page and in the main RSS feed for the site? Otherwise, the two posts I make will show up twice. The podcast posts will also show up in the regular site feed.

    I suppose I could limit all blog posts to a particular specific category, but I was hoping to be able to take better advantage of wordpress’s category features.

    I hope that made sense to someone…

  • Yup, made sense… I do the same thing with a main site and an asides feed. See this tutorial:

    About 1/3 of the way down the page is instructions on how to exclude categories from the main loop. (Will exclude from main page and main rss feed, but category rss feed still works.)

    wow, that’s exactly what I was looking for..thanks!

    I think I’ve actually decided to only exclude the torrent category. I gotta do some testing to see how a regular aggregator reacts to an enclosure tag. I guess it just ignores it.

    One question.. since I went ahead and implemented the post view count in the single page (single.php in the theme), I have no clue how to actually make the post count show up. I want it to show up right before the number of comments.

    I saw mention of %post_view_count%, but I have no idea how to put that in the theme’s index.php.

    If you’re in The Loop, you can display that count with a simple echo in your template.

    echo $post->post_view_count;
