If you don't have caching turned on, it should work fine.

Sorry, but it is not behaving at all like it did before I had put in wp-cache. In the past, items on my front page, would rise quickly in popularity, but now they are all in the 1-3% range. In fact, looking at my dashboard, I have one post ranked at 100% and everything else is below 7%.
My blog is:
http://cogdogblog.com/
If I totally deleted the database table, removed the plug-in, and started over, would that do anything?
thanks
Maybe WP Cache is still on? You say that it was working until you installed WP Cache, then you uninstalled WP Cache and now it isn't working. Since the Popularity Contest code hasn't changed, the issue probably lies elsewhere.
Thanks for the suggestions. In poking through the database, it appeared my older posts that had racked up a lot of popularity points were so far above my new ones, that a new post was only pegging 1-3%. I just emptied the wp-pupualarit database and let it start anew.
Hm, the views of the posts aren't counted. Pings, Trackbacks, Comments are counted.
Did I forgot something to edit in the loop??
I've installed Your new plugin two weeks ago, before no earlier version.
Blog-url: Netprofit Blog - 'Meistgelesen' in the sidebar.
My used wordpress plugins - look at the end of the post.
I'd guess you have a caching plugin turned on...
Hm. No caching plugin. There are also the two tables in my database (wp_ak_...).
A (maybe stupid) question: do I have to put <?php akpc_the_popularity(); ?> into the loop, even I don't want to show the percentage in the post? In Your readme it sounds for me only like an option.
Thanks a lot.
Hi,
I'm (actually, I was :-( ) running Popularity Contest 1.1 along with
on WP 2.0.1.
Actually, I was using all of them just fine on WP 1.5.2, with an older version of the Google Sitemaps plug-in, which I upgraded for compatibility with WP 2. Since I upgraded that plug-in, Popularity Contest has stopped refreshing the data. Deactivating the Google Sitemaps plug-in doesn't help. I've had the same thing happen to a friend of mine running WP 1.5.something.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, and any lack of lack of help perfectly undestandable :-).
Thanks a lot,
César
If I add a new page to my site, how do I get Popularity-Contest to recognise it and record the number of visits etc that it gets. At the moment, any additional pages are completely omitted from its stats.
Hello,
I am running Wordpress 2.0.2 on UNIX / Apache / PHP 4.x and the wonderful Popularity-Contest plugin 1.2b
While I got it to work perfectly on
I am having problems on
On the latter I am running PHPADS to manage the advertisement banners shown on the top.
Well it seems like PHPADS open an SQL connection and leave it open since, when is time for the Popularity Contest plugin to run, it sends out this error:
Table 'phpadsnew.wp2cgi_ak_popularity' doesn't exist
Obviusly thje plug-in tries to open the wrong mySQL DB and I presume this happens because PHPADS came earlier, opened its DB and left it open.
I am going to ask for help to the PHPADS support, of course, in the meanwhile, did anybody experience the same issue? Did you fix it?
Many thanks.
Max
Hi,
me again.
Did anybody have the chance to review my request?
Ciao,
Max
Hi...I tried installing the plug-in but I am getting this error message:
Table 'manilada_wrdp1.wp_ak_popularity_options' doesn't exist
Can anyone help me please?
Hi,
First-- attention Alex King--, I love popularity contest. It is a fantastic plugin.
Now for the support request, I have had a recurring problem with it. For some reason, every 1000 or 1500 visitors Popularity Contest just stops tracking posts. I can tell when this happens because normally a new post has a percentage of 1, but when things go wrong a new post reads 'unranked'. Disabling the plugin, then re-enabling it seems to kick start things again. I now have a second problem, and I'd bet its related.
I have a post-- http://www.hells-handmaiden.com/?p=1113-- that now has a popularity of 91% according to the stats at the bottom of the post. The odd thing is that this post doesn't show up at all in any of the other popularity lists-- like the one on the sidebar on the homepage, http://www.hells-handmaiden.com. Post 1113 should be second on the list, but instead it is nowhere to be found. To make things more perplexing, post 1113 did show up where it should have been earlier today. It then just vanished. I'm not sure why.
I run WP 2.0.3 with the default theme and numerous plugins, which I'll list though disabling them all does not effect the problem. That, and all of these plugins have been functioning together fine for weeks now.

Alright... well, strike that second problem. Things have returned to normal... not sure why but I doubt anyone can help if the problem isn't showing itself.
Hi there,
This is a great plugin, I use it on my of my blogs but it's not working on another one. I get the same problem as two other folks: When I activate the plugin, I get a message saying that 'needle_exchange.wp_ak_popularity doesn't exist.' Which is true; 'needle_exchange.wp_ak_popularity_options' exists, but not 'needle_exchange.wp_ak_popularity.'
On the blog that works, I have the following plugins activated:
CG-Archives by Year; Feed List; Gravatar; Content with show/hide javascript for "more"; PMetrics; Popularity Contest; Related Posts; Spam Karma 2; Simple Search and Replace; Textile 1; WordPress Database Backup; WP-Cron; Weighted Categories; Wikipedia Link; WP-Cron Future Pings
On the blog that doesn't, I have the following plugins activated:
AutoMeta; CG-Archives by Year; Code Markup; Feed List; Gravatar; Content with show/hide javascript for "more"; PMetrics; Related Posts; Spam Karma 2; Dunstan's Time Since; Ubernyms; WordPress Database Backup; WP-Cron; WordPress Mobile Edition; Weighted Categories; Wikipedia Link; WP-ContactForm; WP-Cron Future Pings
So that means that the problem is with one of the following plugins:
AutoMeta
Code Markup
Dunstan's Time Since
Ubernyms
WordPress Mobile Edition
WP-ContactForm
I'm using the latest version of Wordpress and my theme is an adaptation of Kubrick.
Any idea what the problem could be?
To the folks with the same problem as mine: It looks like the problem is with a certain version of mysql. More on the story as it hits.
Is there any way to edit this plugin to calculate page popularity rather than post popularity?
Also, the page views aren't showing when users click on them... should they be updating immediately?
Thanks
Hi Alex,
Thanks for this super plugin! Get a lot of nice comments on it.
I noticed posts with status "published" and a publish date in the future also show up. You can see this happening on http://www.jeugdsentimenten.net/2006/08/ - the 10 most popular articles are listed under "Populair in augustus 2006". As you can see, "Falco - Jeanny" is in the list but the link doesn't work: the article is to show up on the blog on the 6th of august 2006 (two days from now).
Is there a way to correct this?
tia,
Edde
The SQL probably just needs a date check clause. I'll try to get this updated soon.
Updated, but untested:
Thanks! I'll give it a try.
Hi Alex,
I've included the three extra lines. Helas, it doesn't do the trick. I also included
AND post_date > NOW()
after every instance of
WHERE post_status = 'publish'
I could find, but to no avail.
http://www.jeugdsentimenten.net/2006/08/ still shows a link to "Kinderversjes", which is to be published on August 19th. You find the popularity lists in the right sidebar.
Hi Alex,
A bit off-topic _here_, but since you're looking at this issues already: wp-mobile has the same problem. It gives away titles of new posts to pda-users.
People are very impressed by the fact the site has a pda version though. Love it!
Thanks,
Edde
More untested fixes committed.
Please open a new thread for mobile issues.
Thanks for the great plugin.
I have looked online, but can't find a description for: feeds views and archive views. Can someone explain how those are counted, or point me to somewhere that does?
I believe home page views is a count of the times the that post was on the home page when the home page was viewed. I would imagine category views is similar. But I don't understand what counts as a archive view or a feed view.
Alex,
I'm running the latest 1.2b3 (8/6/06 version) version of your plugin and I'm getting the following error when I try and save a post:
Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /var/www/vhosts/mikekoepke.com/httpdocs/wp-content/plugins/popularity-contest.php on line 1298
You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ')' at line 3
I'm using PHP 5.0.4 and MySQL 4.1.14
Alex,
I did some troubleshooting and fixed the error and warning. Starting at line 1298 of the 1.2b3 file:
foreach ((array)$ak_posts as $post) {
$ids[] = $post->ID;
}
$result = mysql_query("
SELECT post_id, total
FROM $wpdb->ak_popularity
WHERE post_id IN ('". implode("','", $ids). "')
") or die(mysql_error());
Basically the $ak_posts needed to be casted to an array and SQL syntax for the IN qualifier needed signle quotes added.
Mike
Great plugin Alex. Wish I could get it to play well with WP.
Running WP 2.0.4. On the Write Post page, I get this error in place of the image upload module:

Correction.
Popularity Contest IS NOT the problem. The culprit is the Google Sitemaps plugin.
Pop Con working fine now.
Thanks again Alex.
Hello all,
hello Alex,
unfortunately after many months the conflict between PHPADS and Popularity Contest persists.
If Install the latest version on Wordpress 2.02 I keep on getting this error:
Table 'DATABASE_phpadsnew.wp2cgi_ak_popularity' doesn't exist
Did anybody face this problem?
Many thanks.
Max
