• Hi,

Due to some problems I was having which were unresolved (see: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/343725?replies=17 ), I decided to back up my blog’s database and do a completely new install of WordPress, then import the DB back in.

So, I backed up my Blog’s SQL database, then did a complete new install of WordPress – and imported the database into it.

So far, everything went fine. I checked the WordPress Admin and everything looks fine. I take a look at the site through my browser, and all looks fine on the home page – all the posts appear ok.

But when I click on a post, or a category, etc, I get a 404 error. So the only page that is displaying is the home page.

Any ideas what the probelm might be please?

  • did you have custom permalinks? If so, you may have to update your permalinks (Settings->Permalinks). Make sure your .htaccess file is writable too. This should fix the 404 error you’re having.

    Hope this helps!

    Thanks Anthony.

The Permalink structure was imported with the SQL database – yet I replaced it with the identical same structure and hit save and all of a sudden the site works!

I don’t quite understand it – but so long as it works, that’s fine.
    Thanks very much.

(Now then, how do I set this thread to ‘resolved’? – that would be a good thing to put in the forum rules!)

Glad to hear you got it working. When migrating a site, by way of fresh install, requires that at .htaccess file be created. If its not moved over, you have to resave your Permalinks and WordPress will recreate the htaccess file for the URL structures to work.

A .htaccess file isn’t always necessary, if you’re using the default WordPress URI structure, so if you’ve changed it beyond the default, then on migration, either include the .htaccess file from your existing site or just regenerate the file by resaving your Permalinks.

Hopefully this clarifies it a little bit more.
