On my weblog I wanted to post an entry which contains a link to a PDF-document produced with LaTeX and it’s source, which is a text file with the .tex extension.

Currently I have those two files simply placed on my webserver and use a manual link to refer to them, but I’d like to use WordPress’ Media Library. No problems with uploading the PDF-document, but the .tex file was refused with the following error message:

File type does not meet security guidelines. Try another.

I was extremely surprised, because I already had two .tex files listed in the Media Library which I uploaded on 6 July 2009. Since that time I probably upgraded my WordPress installations a few times, but in July I still used a recent version, probably 2.8.x or 2.7.x, don’t remember what was recent then. I wonder if there was a change in a certain 2.8.x or 2.9 version which enforces this bizarre security policy?

According to this, this and this .tex files do not belong to the accepted file extensions for documents which can be uploaded. But that only applies to weblogs hosted on WordPress.com, my WordPress installation is hosted on my own webspace.

Possibly, in an oversight, this file types security policy designed for WordPress.com was applied by accident to the ‘normal’ WordPress releases as well? I can’t think of any other explantion which would make sense, if it’s my webspace I should be able to decide which file types I’m going to upload, right?

Whatever the reasons might be, does anyone know a workaround to kill off that insane security policy so I can upload .tex files again? Should I also open a bug report perhaps?

Now I know the solution thanks to the kind people in the IRC channel. The security policy is intended by design, see this topic for an explanation. I’ll use the PJW Mime Config plugin.
