I have the exact same issue, and it started happening when I updated both the Plugin and WordPress to the latest version.
Manual update works fine, but auto update does nothing, and I get the same message as the above poster.
I have tried deleting my existing sitemap, I tried the uninstall and fresh install but to no avail.
Hopefully there will be a fix in the very near future.

Hi,
looks like thats a WP 2.9 bug: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/343080/page/2?replies=42
http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/11505
As a workaround until WP 2.9.1 is released, you can disable the option to build the sitemap in a background process. Note that this will cause some delay after hitting the publish button.
i have also same problem man. please fix it as soon as possible
My suggestion is (and this worked for me) to check your /robots.txt. It is probably disabling the xml.gz file. In this case you have to upload a robots.txt file in public_html with:
“User-agent: *
Allow: /
“
Then rebuild the sitemap manually from this plugin’s section. It should fix your problem.

@margje: i’m using WPMU 2.9.1.1 and I’m having this problem yet …
6 months after these posts and while using WP 3.0 and XML Sitemap Generator 3.2.4 I’m still seeing this problem.
The manual rebuild works fine.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a fix for this? Previous posts suggest a problem with 2.9.1 Beta, but I would have assumed that these bugs have now been rectified with 3.0
Yep the same problem for me on 3.0 …
Any help ?
I am using WP 3.0 and XML Sitemap Generator 3.2.4
I am still seeing this problem.
Manual rebuild does not work for me.
Any suggestions is greatly appreciated!
I am also having the same issue with WP3.0.1 and Google XML Sitemaps 3.2.4. Manual works fine, but automatic always displays the message:
“Your sitemap is being refreshed at the moment. Depending on your blog size this might take some time!
Due to limitations of the WordPress scheduler, it might take another 60 seconds until the build process is actually started.”
Tried deactivating and activating and reinstalling numerous times.
I am using theis them to build a website I used the plugin and it shows that google and all are finding the sitemap but the site map is not appearing on my website http://www.bizzybusinesssolutions.com
Please note I am a novice!
Used this plugin on all my sites for quite some time but one site will not update / create the sitemap file(s). Tried all the chmod stuff and inserted blank sitemap files with 777 access in the root directory but no joy. Played around with the .htaccess file too.
If fails on manual and automatic builds. Using latest version of plugin and WP 3.0.1 with default theme (and no mods). Site is at cyprus-apartment-rentals.co.uk
