  • I am trying to install Word Press ro replace my existing web site, but I do not want to install it online and over ride my existing web site until the new design is right, so I understand that first I have to install XAMPP

but first I have to modify the port numbers:

But I can not open the file associations to modify the port numbers as suggested in the abve article:

Reaching back into my del.icio.us bookmarks, I found this excellent blow-by-blow account from Kiltak at [GeeksAreSexy] on how to setup WordPress to run locally on Windows XP. I only had one issue that forced me to deviate from plan: I already had IIS running on the same system, so I had to modify the port numbers used by apache for HTTP:

In xampplite\apache\conf\httpd.conf, change “Listen 80″ to whatever port you want to use, e.g., “Listen 8000″. Also change “ServerName localhost” to “ServerName localhost:8000″.
In xampplite\apache\conf\extra\httpd-ssl.conf, change “Listen 443″ to use another port (I used 4430). Also change the “<VirtualHost _default_:443>” and “ServerName” lines accordingly.
That’s all you need to do to get HTTP running on apache, then whenever you navigate to the site, specify the port number as well. For some reason, I couldn’t get “localhost:8000″ to work for that, but specifying the IP address worked fine (for instance, http://10.10.10.101:8000). UPDATE: reader Janko tells me that the computer name worked just as well (e.g., http://mycomputer:8000).

All a bit complex – and they say Word Press is a 10 minute installation!

Am I going a bout it the right way?
