    AHHHHHH!!!
    AHHHHHHHHHHH!

ok. now that thats out of the way. I will try and explain as best as can.

Accidentaly made my database and populated it as: latin1_swedish_ci (that is the collaction. Whatever that is?)

At any rate, I use a lot of Japanese on my site. When people save messages, comments using Wordpress it is fine. Even though the input is going in all messed up (i guess because the database is latin) it still comes out ok.

The problem is when I backup my database (export) or make changes via the MySql. The data gets messed up. Now I suspect all my japanese stuff until now will have to be redone: OK. im cool with that. but how do I fixup my database so that unicode stuff from here on in works properly (i can export and reimport with mysql) without losing my huge database?

    AHHHHHHHHH!!!
    thanks in advance.

"The problem is when I backup my database (export) or make changes via the MySql. The data gets messed up."

    How ?

I would guess that it gets messed up by the editor you use to open the .sql file, or by the import process but which is it ?
