3.3.1 — media uploader still not fixed (16 posts)

After updating one of my WP sites to 3.3 I've had endless frustration with the media uploader. It only seems to work with very small images ( >200k is safe) and you have to upload only one or two at a time. As a photographer I'm used to uploading several hundred megabytes of images at a time. This is one of the ways I use WordPress.

So I was glad to see that there was a media upload-related bug in the trac ("Multi-site Upload Limit Stuck at 50MB"), and as soon as I saw 3.3.1 is out, I updated to that and tried out the new media uploader. I dragged 4 2.5 mg jpeg files onto the uploader. The first file uploaded just fine, and then the second one stalled out at 10%. This is the same behavior I've had since I went to 3.3.

This is a huge hassle for me, and I won't update WP any of my other sites until this is fixed. BTW, I do not have any of my sites configured as multi-site.

p.s. I tried this once more after clearing the browser's cache. That allowed 3 images to upload and it got stuck on the 4th. That's still a problem! After a photo shoot I often have 200 images to upload.

It's probably just the default limit in WordPress.

    Try adding php_value upload_max_filesize 10M and php_value memory_limit 64M to .htaccess.

**EDIT - Alternatively, you could try http://www.theinfopreneur.net/usefull/how-to-increase-your-upload-limit-in-wordpress/.

I'll try that, but why would this change after a core update? an update shouldn't really require a word-around in the htaccess file.

It probably wouldn't, but the default limit is quite low.

Have you considered uploading smaller images. 2.5meg is really way too large for any image on a web site.

http://www.smushit.com/ysmush.it/ is a fantastic image compressor. It doesn't get rid of a single bit of quality, either.

Smush.it uses optimization techniques specific to image format to remove unnecessary bytes from image files. It is a "lossless" tool, which means it optimizes the images without changing their look or visual quality. After Smush.it runs on a web page it reports how many bytes would be saved by optimizing the page's images and provides a downloadable zip file with the minimized image files.

I don't think requiring re-sizing or smushing of images should be necessary for WordPress use. As long as the user is paying for server space, it should not be an issue.

Regarding the site I was testing on, this is a client site, for a person who does not use photoshop or image processing tools. She snaps with her iphone and uploads images to WP and expects them to appear -- a perfectly reasonable expectation. iphone pics are frequently 2.5 megs.

As a photographer, I frequently upload images far larger than 2.5 megs with no trouble at all. A ten or twelve meg jpeg is not unusual for me, and WP used to handle this easily. The purpose was not to display these images at full res, but to make them available to the client for download. This is my business model.

Then you are going to need a ton of PHP memory to allow WordPress to process those images.

Testing the media uploader on a second site, running WP 3.3.1.
I tried uploading a single 800k jpeg, and it stalled at 20%. This after clearing the cache. I tried a again, same result at 18%.

    This is a 3.3 (and 3.3.1) bug.

I'd be more inclined to say that it's your server or the way that WordPress is setup. I'm running many 3.3.* sites and none of them have this issue.

I eventually did get my media uploaded, by switching to the legacy uploader. Even then it stalls about half the time.

The two sites with upload problems are on different hosting companies. One is tigertech.net, on which I have installed a great many WP sites. They are my favorite host. The other is on drizzle.net, which also seems to have it together. Both hosts allow automatic installs and upgrades.

The install is pretty standard, although I put WP in a subdirectory. Media folder is named uploads and is in wp-content, i.e. standard set up.

I started building a new site, this one for a professional photographer. I downloaded WP 3.1.1 from the archives, and installed that on his server. I know I'll be uploading a lot of images for this guy, and didn't want to take chances on the media uploader. Maybe later we'll update to get the site current — assuming this image thing gets fixed.

Its awkward to complain about software that I never paid for (i.e. WordPress) but the fact is that WordPress has now become my livelihood. I'm a full time WordPress guy now. So when I do an update like the one to 3.3, and for my purposes its broken, it scares the heck out of me.

I'm still having the same issues with the media uploader, in more websites. This is so frustrating.. My clients can't upload simple images to their websites. Clearing the cache does NOT solve the problem (it shouldn't even be necessary though).
