I installed WP on Friday, scrupulously imported a blog and customized the layout, got it running more or less beautifully, wrote several new things in WP specifically, and then accidentally deleted the database without backing up.
I still have all my files and content folders on my server and have downloaded them locally and have created a new database. Is there a way to get my old posts and theme working again?
Bonus: do me a favor - I already know how dumb this was, so please refrain from re-informing me. I need to know if I have to start from scratch or if there is hope.
Thanks!
I'm pretty sure your posts went out with the database, I don't see how you can get those back....
Nothing is kept in the actual files (does your host happen to run backups?)
The database houses your posts/pages/categories/users/tags/links/options/customfields. So you've lost those.
The wordpress folder on your host's server contains the WordPress core scripts, plugins, themes, and uploads.

I can see if the host keeps backups. Good to know that the actual files get zapped with the db (seems logical). What gave me hope was that the uploads folder still had images and media.

Hey Michael,
Thank you so much for steering me in the right direction. My host (ICDSoft) does keep backups. I just recreated the name of my old database (the one I'd deleted) and I did a restore that took all of three minutes.
It has been a very educational morning and I appreciate your help.
Just noting that RVoodoo is the one who suggested "does your host happen to run backups?"
:D hey thanks MichaelH! I'm glad it worked tho, I had to resort to that once, that's how I found out it worked

Wow. And now I compound the morning's atrocities by failing to give proper credit to Rvoodoo...
Thanks Rvodoo and Michael!

to further add: how did you know what the old names of the database were called?
