    WP v. 2.8.5, OS v.2.1.6

Writing 2 parts of a series and it will not allow me to set the series part to anything but 1, so both articles show as Part 1 of 0 in a series.

I tried rolling back to v 2.1.5 and it still does it.

I checked my database but don't see any errors, and nothing else on my site is misbehaving.

I deactivated all other plugins and it still does it.

    Help!

    A couple quick questions:

    1. Are the posts saved as drafts/scheduled posts/ or pending?
    2. Have the posts been saved and then added to a series or are they added to the series when first written?
    3. Did you just upgrade and experience this behavior or is it something that just "started all of a sudden"? In other words, is this the first time you've tried adding to a series since installing 2.1.6?

I'll try reproducing but I can't fix until I can reproduce.

They were first saved as drafts

They were then published as private (so the world wouldn't see them if they were still messed up) - then reverted back to drafts

The series was added when the post was first written, before being saved in any way.

Yes, I did just upgrade and experience this behavior. I did not notice this happening prior. This is the first series I have attempted to add since installing the upgrade.

However, as I mentioned above, I deleted 2.1.6 and re-installed 2.1.5 (which had been working previously) and it still did it. Since it didn't help, I went ahead and re-upgraded to 2.1.6.

    Thanks for your help.

    Okay,
When saving a post as a draft, scheduled, or pending that is part of a series you will get the "Part 1 of 0" if there are no other posts in a series and if there are posts something like "Part 5 of 4" where a series has 4 posts. However, when you go to publish the part will correctly increment as expected.

So, are you saying we have to publish the first part before we can set the second as part 2?

No. When you go to publish your posts it will automatically number them based on the date published.

Also, if you have every post in the series saved as a draft before publishing you may want to use the Organize Series Publisher plugin included with the base Organize Series. With that, you can publish an entire series in one go AND reorder the posts using drag and drop javascript goodness before publishing.

We'll give that a try. The Series Publisher didn't seem to be working when we tried it the first time - it seemed we couldn't publish at all, but maybe we just weren't doing it right.

Okay, it did publish properly but it didn't automatically number them by date. It showed them both as part 1 of 2. But, once they were published, I was able to go back in and correct #2 to #2 and it took it, which it wouldn't do before it was published.
