WP Tag Cloud vs. Simple Tags Tag Cloud

I’ve been using Simple Tags Plugin on both of my blogs. Some time ago, when updating WP, I noticed that WP added tag support. So, no more need for a tag plugin, right? But, not so fast…

When changing the theme for one of my blogs, I noticed that its dynamic sidebar (not a widget) had a space for a tag cloud. It used “wp_tag_cloud” in the code, but nothing appeared until I changed it to “st_tag_cloud.”

My other blog seems to recognize tags, no matter if I am using Simple Tags or the WP-provided space for tags.

The code “st_tag_cloud” works fine for now. But I am wondering if there is some way to merge tags so that from now on I can make use of WP code for tags instead of keeping a plugin? Seems like having two tagging functions will just weigh down my site.

Please let me know your thoughts on this.
