Warning message on installing a new theme (11 posts)

I am trying to install a new template - I apparently broke something and can't figure out how to fix it.

I got this message after trying to add one new theme, I went into my c-panel, deleted that themes folder and tried again...now getting same message no matter what new theme I try to install, what can I clear out of cpanel to have a clean slate (without deleting my blog posts)? Or did I goof by deleting the folder in the first place? Getting the same error both before I deleted the folder and after.

I looked in the folders identified below and can see the files the message says doesn't exist in both cases.

    Here is the message:

Warning: file(/home/woa1424/public_html/how2marketingadvice.com/wp-content/themes/tribune/style.css) [function.file]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/woa1424/public_html/how2marketingadvice.com/wp-includes/theme.php on line 180

Warning: implode() [function.implode]: Invalid arguments passed in /home/woa1424/public_html/how2marketingadvice.com/wp-includes/theme.php on line 180

Help appreciated. I can best be classed an intermediate - still piecing my way through - I can't write code.

    Thanks,
    Lisa

So all of the themes that you tried to install have had a style.css file inside their theme folder?

This might be contributing to your issue.

Note the number of "tribune" directories. One too many.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my issue.

esmi: I have no idea, I didn't check to see if the other templates have style.css files ...all I know is I can't add two or three other themes I had picked out as an option.

Clayton: I don't think that's it - today I find that Tribune magically works, but I still cannot add another theme (or maybe it just happens to be the themes I picked-hard for me to say when I don't know what I'm doing :-)
Here is the message that comes up regarding tribune which makes me think it is where it is supposed to be:
    under >Manage Themes > Current Themes :
All of this theme’s files are located in /themes/tribune/tribune.

This theme appears to be working now so I guess my problem is temporarily solved but it looks like I may not be able to ever change to something else unless I can determine why I'm getting this message.

I just wanted to know how to put things back as they were before I added these themes and don't know how...is there a place within the Codex you recommend or a good tutorial on how the blog files should look before a theme is on the blog?

    Thanks for any help.

If you don't install any new themes (or remove those you have installed), the blog will default to using the default theme.

esmi, how do I delete the themes I installed so that they are completely gone? Do I just go in that one folder on the cpanel - does deleting the one folder under themes assigned to each theme take care of it or are there pieces of it living somewhere else, in other folders? Deleting the themes doesn't seem to solve the problem so I thought something else must have been affected that needs put back right with the world before I can go and replace the themes.

    Thanks,
    Lisa

You need to delete the individual theme folders inside wp-content/themes. Just ensure that you leave the default and classic folders intact.

Thanks esmi, I'll try that and see if anything else flys apart.

Stay tuned though because I may be back crying in my soup if it doesn't go as planned :-)

I'm still getting that message. All of the themes I install are doing that double folder thing and I believe that's at the root of it, I just don't know why they are installing this way.

The themes work, except for one that kept giving a broken theme message so I deleted that one and moved on. The themes install, give the message they are installed successfully and just beneath that the error message above. I just click over to themes though and they are available and appear to work.

I would prefer to fix this if someone can tell me how but if not I guess it will just have to be like it is. :-)

Can you upload themes by FTP or use the cPanel file manager to upload them? It's just a case of downloading the theme as a zip, unpacking it on your machine and uploading the theme folder to wp-content/themes.

Thanks esmi, I'll try that route, I've been using the automated install option.

I assume I must have done something to cause it to start installing them wrong but I have no idea what.

I don't have it in me to tackle it tonight - I'll try this out tomorrow.

    :-)
