How do I know which options a theme has or prevent? (8 posts)

    Hi

I am new to WP, but not new to the field.
One of the most daunting questions to me is how do I know what options are supported or not supported by a theme before installing it?
Sure, there's a description, but it doesn't say what the theme doesn't do: for instance, the Page templates option is avaliable in such a theme and not in another. How do I find this out?
And is there a list of all the options ?

    Thanks

You can get some idea of what options might be available in themes from the Themes Directory by checking out the tags associated with the theme. These themes also have to comply with a Theme Development Checklist. Other than that, it's a case of trying each theme out.

Well that's impossible, how are we supposed to try each theme and compare them?
A good tool would be a database compiling all the possible options...

I don;t think that you appreciate the enormity of such a task. apart from the sheer number of themes out there, what features would you catalogue?

I would catalogue all the features, not the pkugins or widgets but the features that belong to a theme. Being able to modifiy the banner is one, though you could do it with the CSS, having a "Page templates option" is a feature that I would like to see for instance, or any other options. I installed WP on Monday, so I am quite new at this, but I am familiar with Drupal, and I'd like to know before I install a them what options it'll prevent.
    :-)Thanks

    See 'custom-header'

Any theme has the ability to contain as many custom page templates as needed. But since these are usually required for very specific situations, it's not feasible for theme developers to include them.

Sure but did you see all of the other options you can check in your search for a theme?

You can add a custom page template to any theme.
