[resolved] First install - only see default host page and admin page is white (5 posts)

My first try at a WP install so sorry if this is basic. After seemingly successful install, my website still displays what appears to be default content from the host. I looked at the source code for this file and it looks like .../welcome.php. Thought I could go to my host file directory and delete this file from the domain folder, but there is no file named welcome.php anywhere in there!

I'm guessing it is related that when I go to .../wp-admin I only see a white screen.

I have two index.php files, for what that is worth, one in the domain folder along with a bunch of wp- files and one inside the wp-content folder which is also in the domain folder.

You will have multiple index.php files in a WordPress install. If you have an index.html file in your web-root folder you may want to rename/delete it.

Typically, a blank screen during or right after installation means you didn't get a complete and intact set of WordPress files uploaded to your host. I'd consider downloading a fresh copy of WordPress from the Download tab at the top of this page, then use something like 7-Zip to extract the files. Then reupload the files to your host. Review Uploading WordPress to a remote host and make sure you are using ASCII transfer mode in your FTP client.

If you have an .htaccess file, that too could be causing the problem--rename that if necessary.

Thanks, Michael. I did indeed have a couple of different .htaccess files (I deleted them but it didn't change anything). I don't see any index or default files in my web-root folder (just some 400, 401, 402, 500, etc. files, a cgi-bin and the subdomain folder this holds the Wordpress install).

Interestingly, I *can* see a very basic "just another blog" page when I go to my actual URL (logosfellowship.ckckjones.net) but not when I go to the redirected URL (logosfellowship.com). The admin site is white screen no matter what though.

I didn't actually upload anything for this install but used a Simple SCripts tool provided by my host (bluehost).

Does any of this change your recommendation? I done the Simple Script install routine twice with the same result.

Not sure what the simple script is doing...might consider installing WordPress on your own -- see Installing WordPress.

Otherwise, if the Simple Script isn't working for you call bluehost.

Wanted to close this loop. Turned out I had some name server issues that I had to resolve. My host (bluehost) did a great job of fixing everything and I'm good to go. Thanks for the suggestions and quick responses. It really gave me a good start.
