The thing is, cutting/pasting an IRC chat for instance causes a problem. Because then I have to go through and manually replace the characters with < and > (or paste in notepad, replace there, cut/paste back).
It’s a hassle. WordPress either needs to allow a workaround or at the very least, a replace/replaceall feature during posting.
Just read my first post, don’t know how to edit a previous message, but the last sentence in the first paragraph should read:
“Putting the poast in CODE or BLOCKQUOTE doesn’t help”.
I guess the forum ate the angle brackets because it thought I was using them as html. How appropriately ironic.
You can paste your IRC chats into something like this to encode them for pasting into WordPress. This is not necessarily a WordPress failing, but rather a limitation of working in an environment where it’s assumed you’re writing HTML.
I still believe there should be an option for non-HTML writing. I doubt blogger users have to put up with this very awkward workaround or memorizing html syntax.

No, they don’t, they have a WYSIWYG interface instead of raw HTML in their publish page. But then, if that’s your desire you’re more than welcome to use one of the many WYSIWYG plugins for WordPress.
Just about EVERYONE who includes arrows (><) in their posts uses the &< and > codes. I put those posts in my text editor, do a quick search and replace and then copy and paste them into my code.
You should see the work involved in trying to make &amp; show up on the screen helping people know how to write the code for the ampersand. 😉
