   It would be really nice if I didn't have to convert < to the html character &xxx; when using code tags. (when using the html editor)

   That's standard practice on any web page. Otherwise the web browser will parse the tags instead of displaying them,

   Yes, so If I use the code tags and I want to put a < inside of the code tags, it should automatically convert that into the &xx; code rather then me having to look up the character code and type it in.
