I'm having the same problem described here:
    http://scribu.net/wordpress/smart-archives-reloaded/sar-1-7.html#comment-3041

Here's the message I get when I try to activate the plugin.

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_CLASS in [site here]/wp-content/plugins/smart-archives-reloaded/smart-archives-reloaded.php on line 55

    Details:
    ・ WP version - 2.8.5
・ All plugins save for Akismet disabled, no dice
・ hosted on a dreamhost server
・ This is my first time trying to install this plugin.

Anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this? Thanks in advance!

Did you read the reply to that comment? Your host is running PHP4.

    Thanks for the reply.

I'm sorry, I did actually read the reply, but didn't quite follow what adding that to wp-config.php would do - or, for that matter, where to add it (from what I gather, this is just a diagnostic thing that will spit out the current version of PHP being used? I gave it a shot and that's what it did for me). The reply didn't actually say what was wrong with any particular version of PHP. I mistakenly understood your reply as "if you add this line in, it will fix the issue".

At any rate, I just found another thread here (http://wordpress.org/support/topic/254840?replies=4) that mentions that this plugin doesn't work with PHP4, which is indeed what I'm using. I guess I need to update.

Sorry for the mixup, my fault. I also see that this was written in the FAQ, which I didn't think to check. Sorry, and thanks again.
