   I want to add an Amazon a-store on the main page sidebar below the last line of vistor stats. I tried inserting the code in sidebar php but that didn't work. Can anyone explain how to do this?

   have you tried using a text widget?

   As samboll said create a new 'text' widget and paste your Amazon a-store code in there. It'll show up in the sidebar.

   You may need to tweak your A-store to get it to match your theme and fit the sidebar. Good luck!
