   The spam comments I'm getting are ridiculous and - for this stage in my blogs life - volumous.

   I've had the blog installed for a few months but have only 4 posts and get jokes and all sorts of rubbish from everywhere.

   Is there a plugin or some admin tool that can prevent these things from getting through?

   Oh yes.

   Try things like Akismet and Bad Behavior, or the many other anti spam plugins...
