   - images uploaded individually via Wordpress uploader are ok; images uploaded via ftp client into the same folder are physically present in the directory, but logically absent, and do not show in Wordpress media library.
   - i spent hours looking for clues in the forum. I don't understand if this is a known bug or not.
   - no plugins, basic theme; invisibility affects images all sizes.

   I don't have a ton of wp experience but it seems like I read somewhere recently that you can't just ftp upload files. The uploader adds them to the database so they can be inserted with various options, without the database info the media library can't see them.
