   I get a lot of commenters that sign up, but they don't leave any comments. Most are gmail or .ru email addresses.

   But I have very low traffic.

   I'm sure that they must be spamming somehow, but I don't know how?

   I use Akismet for comments.

   I wouldn't be surprised that you get many more signups than actual comments. Sign-up per se are harmless, but you can delete them if you want at the risk of irritating a real visitor. You might be seeing an attempt to use the comment form to hack the site. Its possible but its hard to tell without really looking into server logs and poking through the DB and such.
