All of a sudden when I try to update to version 3.2.1.
Hostname
FTP Username
FTP Password
Connection Type
Connection Type FTP FTPS (SSL)
I get this even on my own server. i do not have ftp installed. How can I auto update. It seems not worth doing if i have to disable all the plugins and run the risk of damaging something.?

This is due to your server settings. If scripts on your server are set to run under the "nobody" user you will be prompted for FTP login details.
Contact your host to get your FTP information. Nearly every commercial host provides FTP access to your site.
