• I’ve installed latest version of Now Reading Reloaded and configured options with my AWS keys. When I go to add a book the search function works fine. When I press the “Use This Result” button or try to manually add the book it gives me “Error Adding Book” with no further explanation. I turned on debug mode and I get output when I search but it provides none when I get the error. I have error logging on and I’m not getting any PHP errors either. Please advise.

  • Did you turn on WP’s debug mode, or NR’s debug mode?

    Try turning on whichever one you didn’t do and see what happens (add define ('WP_DEBUG', true); in wp-config.php)

    I have also exactly the same problem with latest version. I have turned on NR debug mode but it does not complain when I try to add a book (it doesn’t matter if it is by searching from amazon or manually).

    After enabling wordpress debug mode, as previously stated, i get:

    Please advise. (thanks in advance)

    WP debug mode isn’t really helpful; what does the NR debug mode (available on the options page) produce?

    Also, please provide some information about your hosting platform (Windows or Linux? What versions of PHP, MySQL, WordPress, Apache, etc)?

    I’m getting this same error. Fresh install of WordPress 2.9, Debian, MySQL 5.0.77, PHP 5.2.5, and I’m still trying to figure out my Apache version (new webhost).

    NR debug mode: When I search an ISBN, i get the results fine, and the following debug info:

    string(30633) "

    <Summary>
    My first "marketing" book -- a fine choice!
    </Summary>

    <Content>
    I am a marketing rookie, so much of what I found interesting in this book may be old news to anyone with marketing experience. Having said that, I believe this book is a good read for anyone: for newbies, it's a good primer; for more seasoned people, it should serve as a good reference book.
    <br />
    <br />While you may not agree with the notion of the 'chasm', or with the author's ideas on how to overcome it (or, at the very least, on how to anticipate and recognize it), the thought process is wonderful -- good thinking where none had gone before. The examples are somewhat out-of-date, and I'd be interested to see how the referenced companies actually dealt with some of the issues mentioned. But they are still very useful for supporting the analogy and providing clarity, and I enjoyed reading about them.
    <br />
    <br />I am also easily swayed by an author who is passionate about his subject, and writes well enough to make his point. The best word I can come up with for Moore's writing is: INFECTIOUS. Chasm or not, I was ready to tackle the world after I finished this book.
    <br />
    <br />All told, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it for anyone working on a new product -- even if the product isn't a chasm-crosser!

    Perfect for professionals dealing with discontinuous innovation
    </Summary>

    <Content>
    There are very few texts that do a good job dealing with how to convince the market to adopt new technologies. The standard TALC (tech adoption life cycle) texts have serious flaws when it comes to discontinuous technologies. Geoffrey Moore nails it with Crossing the Chasm. If you are an executive or marketing professional introducing high tech products you will be well served by this book. It will help you understand if you cross the line into discontinuous innovation and need to adopt chasm approaches to your customer base. Even if you don't deal with discontinuous products you will learn a lot of the different types of customer demographics encountered by any high tech marketer.

    Don't waste time on late adopters - with any new idea
    </Summary>

    <Content>
    This business book captures in a few pages my over arching outlook on how change happens in the world (and just so happens to be a good way to approach launching high tech innovations).
    <br />
    <br />I refer to it often as a baseline for clients and anyone I am talking to to understand the process they are about to embark upon. This book came out a long time before Malcolm Gladwell popularized similar ideas in The Tipping Point.
    <br />
    <br />I recommend it highly to all my clients so we can agree to speak the same language about product development and the world we are trying to launch a product or change initiative into.

    <Content>
    Author Geoffrey Moore makes the case that high-tech products require marketing strategies that differ from those in other industries. His chasm theory describes how high-tech products initially sell well, mainly to a technically literate customer base, but then hit a lull as marketing professionals try to cross the chasm to mainstream buyers. This pattern, says Moore, is unique to the high-tech industry.<p> Moore suggests remedies for the problem that can help businesses meet their long-term goals. He coaches marketing professionals on how to move slowly through the gulf, teaching them to create profiles and target specific segments of the population rather than trying to plow right into the mainstream. He cites examples of successful chasm crossings by such companies as Apple, Tandem, Oracle, and Sun, showing what they all had in common and exposing the different weaknesses in their strategies. Moore also assigns responsibility for success to programmers and developers by suggesting they design a "whole product model." Here, because integration tasks are daunting to the mainstream market, all the components of a technological product must be in one package. Moore also describes strategies for competing with rival companies and assessing the best distribution channels for penetrating the target market.<p> Written not just for marketing specialists but for all employees whose futures ride on the success of a technical product, <I>Crossing the Chasm</I> delivers crucial information in an engaging, readable tone.

    After that, clicking on “Use this result” only throws the “Error adding book”, with no NR debug info at all. Same applies if I try to add the book manually

    The hosting platform it’s a Bitnami WAMP Stack with wordpress module, that is: WordPress 2.9, Windows, MySQL 5.1.30, PHP 5.2.10 and Apache 2.2.13 .

    I’ve spent some time tracking this one down, since there was no real info about it. In my case, this is being caused by an error during database creation. For some reason, the wp_now_reading CREATE script is giving the error:

    [01-Jan-2010 19:40:21] WordPress database error You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '
    	b_started datetime default,
    	b_finished datetime default,
    	b_title VARCHAR(100' at line 3 for query
    	CREATE TABLE wp_now_reading (
    	b_id bigint(20) NOT NULL auto_increment,
    	b_added datetime default,
    	b_started datetime default,

    	b_title VARCHAR(100) NOT NULL,

    	INDEX title (b_title),
    	INDEX author (b_author)
    	) made by activate_plugin, do_action, call_user_func_array, nr_install, dbDelta

    Not sure exactly what the problem is, since I’m not really familiar with MySQL syntax.

    EDIT: For reference, my MySQL version is 5.0

    The problem seems to be the ‘default’ on the datetime lines. I solved this by entering the SQL manually without the ‘default’ on those three lines. I have not tested it, but I suspect that you could also change 118-120 of now-reading.php to:

    b_added datetime,
    	b_started datetime,
    	b_finished datetime,

    and then re-activate the plugin. I don’t know whether this is a desirable solution; I don’t know that much about MySQL types, so I’m not sure if this alters the behavior. It does, however, allow the plugin to work.

    Kumarei,

    This appears to be my careless introduction of a bug from some minor schema changes I did for the previous release.

    I’ve just released 5.1.2.1, which should hopefully fix that issue.

    Excellent – this update fixed the issue for me. Thanks!
