• http://wordpress.org/about/ is outdated in a variety of ways, some obvious such as the language “2008 looks on track to do three major releases again. It will be a very exciting year.” 2008 was exciting, after all but… WP deserves a refreshed About page 🙂

There is one bit of information in which I’m particularly interested. From the opening lines: “It has grown to be the largest self-hosted blogging tool in the world, used on millions of sites and seen by tens of millions of people every day.” WordPress.com now hosts 7.5 million blogs, wrote Matt in September 09 and while that’s an easier figure to add up, we can do better than describing the number of .org installations as “millions of sites.” Is it 5 million? 10? 20?

Who has a better figure or means to it? I see there have been over 6.6 million downloads but of course, that’s not quite the number of WP sites.

Wikipedians recently answered part of my question, but with two possibly specious numbers. These are fantastic, but are they true?

    From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WordPress

As of September 2009, WordPress [sic] is used by 62.8 million websites in the US and 202 million websites worldwide.

The article cites two sources which are actually one — one refers to the other — as see its References. The singular source appears to be Jason Calacanis, and while I have found Jason to be a good source in general, I do not know him personally and I do not know his source.

Aside from the question of how many sites use WordPress — whether “millions” or “202 million,” I still wonder how and when we can update http://wordpress.org/about/.

    Anyone?
