First week of September I upgraded to the latest version of WP for my blog (http://www.blork.org/blorkblog)

Everything was fine until today. If I, or anyone else, goes to my blog, all you see is the first page of the WordPress Installation screen, the bit where you plug the blog’s name and your email address. The message is:

“Welcome to the famous five minute WordPress installation process! You may want to browse the ReadMe documentation at your leisure. Otherwise, just fill in the information below and you’ll be on your way to using the most extendable and powerful personal publishing platform in the world.”

Plus I’ve gotten three emails that say:

Your new WordPress blog has been successfully set up at:
    http://www.blork.org/blorkblog
You can log in to the administrator account with the following information:
    Username: admin
    Password:
(Note: the password field was blank)

Huh? I did NOTHING to initiate this! And my blog is nine years old — the last five years on WordPress. These messages imply my blog has been wiped out and replaced with a new one!

I FTPed in and my WordPress files are all dates Sept. 6, the day I did the upgrade, so it does not appear that someone is trying to install over my current installation.

However, I cannot log into my MyPHP account — the password seems to have been changed. I have a support ticket open with my provider to reset it, but that probably won’t happen until tomorrow. (They have also confirmed that they have done nothing to cause this.)

In the meantime, has anyone here seen anything like this before? Is this some kind of hacker attack, or has WordPress simply gone rogue on me?

Also, how do I fix this???

  • Wow, that is the exact same thing that happened to me, which I just wrote about also. It’s so strange.

Better delete install.php at http://www.blork.org/blorkblog/wp-admin/install.php in the meantime. What’s the name of your webhost? I hope you have a backups of your database and files/folders in your server.

it’s possible you weren’t hacked and instead the wp_options table is crashing in the database which would cause the install screen to come up
repair that database table and see what happens

    so strange.

not really – its what samboll said

Your options table is crashed and needs to be repaired.

When your website redirects to wp-admin/install.php [FIX] :

    1. Login to phpMyAdmin.
    2. Select the database and click on ‘Structure’ tab.
    3. Right under the list of table there is a “Check All” link. Click on it to select all tables.
    4. From a “With selected:” drop-down menu right next to it, choose “Check table”.

    To Repair:

    1. Login to phpMyAdmin
    2. Choose the affected database. If you only have one database, it should choose it by default so you don’t need to do anything.
    3. In the main panel, you should see a list of your database tables. Check the boxes by the tables that need repair.
    4. At the bottom of the window just below the list of tables, there is a drop down menu. Choose “Repair Table”

OK, I did that. The wordpress database did not report any problems, but I have a database in there called “information_schema” (I have no idea what that is). ALL reported an error and it recommended I repair the database. When I tried, it gave me an “access denied” error!

Thanks for the info though… I think I’ve found the problem. Now it’s back to the provider to get them to fix it.

information_schema‘ is a database used internally by MySQL.

Update: Somehow I missed it, but there was one WordPress table that needed to be repaired. It was repaired, and the blog came back. There was a small amount of cleanup to do, because the “Welcome” routine had run itself ten times, so I had ten bogus “Welcome to wordpress” posts to delete, ten comments from “Mr. WordPress” to delete, and my “About” page had re-created itself ten times. After I deleted all those, everything is back to normal.

so, youre welcome, then, I guess 😛

Heh heh. Sorry about that… THANKS Whooami for the excellent advice! 🙂

SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP! I tried following instructions in these forums, but I don’t have much knowledge of all this html-speak and the only window I get is the “Welcome to the famous five minute WordPress installation process!” window! I just want my old WordPress setup back! I don’t want this five-minute install upgrade. How do I go back? What link or place do I have to go to exactly to get this reversed?

I’d almost pay to have this thing put back to the old way! PLEASE HELP!
