Migrating web sites, mapping / redirecting URLs
-
Hello all,
We’re relatively new to WordPress, but we have successfully ported our 12,000 page web site to PHP/WordPress and some other solutions.
One problem that we have is that there’s a lot of links to news items and such that we have. For example, the old news items would look like this:
http://www.mactech.com/news/mt-news-detail.mgi?id=00000e92be8f6065
but the new WordPress based URLs look like this (obvious, I know):
http://www.mactech.com/news/?p=1007307
Now, we *DO* have a custom field already in the “news” database. The field is named mgidb_id (MGI is the name of the old technology we were using prior to PHP).
What I’d like to do is be able to put a page that would redirect, and still display the right news item. Unfortunately, I can neither figure out how to do the redirect, nor can I figure out how to ask WordPress for the right news item (e.g., looking up on a custom field).
For example, I tried doing something as simple as:
http://www.mactech.com/news/mt-news-detail.mgi?mgidb_id=00000e92be8f6065
and that doesn’t work.
(In case you are wondering, we’re PHP and WordPress newbies. In addition, we’re just getting going with Apache and mySQL. To answer one question in advance, yes, “mgi” is set up as a MIME Type to go through the PHP pre-processor).
Ideas?
Thanks,
Neil
