I have just added a blog to a years-old site that had a www url. The WP blogs were created without the www so:
    site home page: http://www.sitename.com
    blog home page: http://sitename.com/blog/

I have backlinks into my main site; I'm starting to build them into my blog.

Q1: Is this structure OK for SEO?

Q2: If not, what setting(s) should I change in my blog to make it conform to the www format?

    Thanks.

I would change it, go to setting in the dashboard area and you will see the url that your site is at. Just add the www in there and your good. I have to do this every time I make a new site.

Opps I left out a step.

    Here is what you do:

    login> Settings> General

    You will see a field

    "WordPress address (URL)
    Blog address (URL)"

    Change the address.
