My monthly archive list is getting rather long (e.g. 3 years worth/ 36 months). This makes for a rather lengthy scroll to get to what is beneath it.
Is there any way to show archives for the current year by month, and previous years just by the year listing?

Yes, you can do that by using two wp_get_archives directives. Another approach is to have the list be in a drop-down box. Then it takes up no room at all.
