login expires without warning

The other day I had my login (perhaps cookie) expire while I was writing a post. When I went to click post, instead I got a login screen. After I logged in, it showed the last autosave which included very little of my post. It was frustrating to lose so much.
I know I have to login every week or two when the cookie expires but this was the first time it happened in the middle of writing a post.
