   I have had this problem persistently since 2.5.1

   After I upgrade, I still get the message in the yellow bar at the bottom of the dashboard reminding me to upgrade to the latest version, and also a reminder in the page footer as well.

   I have read that this could be due to ghost accounts, rogue entries in the wp_options active_plugins field etc. but I've checked everything in phpmyadmin and can't see anything out of the ordinary. So why is it still asking me to upgrade?

   Should I try deleting all my plugins? Or backing up my blog contents from the database, removing, and rebuilding the database?

   Any help is greatly appreciated.

   just to be sure, check (download and open in notepad)
   /wp-includes/version.php
   is it correct?

   yup.

   $wp_version = '2.8.4';

   And in the source code of my blog page it has wordpress 2.8.4 listed as the generator as well.

   thanks for the speedy response. Any other ideas?

   I wouldn't delete the plugins - maybe deactivate all of them then clear your browser cache and site cookies and see if it persists

   as for the database, I might run a repair on all the tables before doing anything drastic

   also, "browse" the wp_options table and look at
   db_version
   and see if it is
   11548
   if not edit and change to that and it should fix it

   Thanks for the suggestions samboll. Still no joy though... I cleared all my browser history, cache, cookies etc., repaired all the tables, and made sure the db_version is 11548. That blasted reminder is still there!

   Obviously it's not a big problem (I think?) But I just want to make sure I do actually have the latest version and am fully protected from these recent hack attacks. I should probably mention that I found 2 fake contributor accounts on my users page a couple of weeks ago but they were not admins and I was able to delete them quite easily. I haven't seen any other symptoms of an attack (all my permalinks are fine etc.). Surely if I've had this recurring problem with the persistent reminder since 2.5.1 then it can't be related to this attack right?

   no - surely not
   and you have the correct db number so you are up to date
   I'm out of ideas, though

   One possibility....did you originally install with some auto-installer like simple scripts or fantastico and then later upgrade through WP? If so, then there may be some files in your install and/or an extra table in your db that is holding the upgrade info from the auto-install. Also, if you upgraded in the past with some upgrade plugin, then the same "extra files and/or db info" may apply.

   nope. i've always used wordpress automatic update. very strange.

   Install the Core Control plugin and use that to 'check for updates'. That worked for me at 2.8.4
