Are the static pages created in WordPress or separately?
If you mean static pages in WordPress, I don’t know.
You could install WordPress in the /blog/ directory and then do url rewriting for the WordPress static pages. Rewriting the your_domain.com/blog/static_pages to your_domain.com/static_pages. Not sure if that is the best way to go though.
Several ways to go with this, but why not just install the blog in root…set a static frontpage and then create a page called “blog” for your post page? See the following video for how to do this.

this doesnt work, i have tried and instead my posts come out like this:

I want them to appear in the directory ‘blog’ any ideas at all, anyone else?

Hi , I have found the way, i was just not doing it properly:
Once on the WordPress admin area, go to permalinks options:
http://www.davidcarralon.com/wp-admin/options-permalink.php
select the last one: ‘custom structure’ and enter it this way
/blog/%postname%
or if you prefer it like this
/blog/%postname%/
so your blog posts will appear with the forward slash at the end of the url. I wonder myself if both approaches are equally SEO friendly.
I would quite like to add the .htm or .html extension now but if I install the .html plugin, I cant use the custom structure, so best to have urls without extension, that was my compromise. If anyone finds out how to add the .html or whichever extension based on the url structure model outlined on this thread, please go ahead and make a suggestion
