Please go easy on me I am a complete newbie at this. I'm trying to upgrade Wordpress to create a family blog for my family's website. I installed Wordpress through my site host's auto installer. Webmasters.com is my hosting company. This installed Wordpress 2.7 So before I start tweaking everything I would like to upgrade to the newest version. When in the admin panel and I click on automatically upgrade I get this:

Warning: touch() [function.touch]: SAFE MODE Restriction in effect. The script whose uid/gid is 10044/10001 is not allowed to access /tmp owned by uid/gid 0/0 in /usr/local/4admin/apache/vhosts/rutherfordcorner.com/httpdocs/wordpress/wp-admin/includes/file.php on line 174

Warning: fileowner() [function.fileowner]: SAFE MODE Restriction in effect. The script whose uid/gid is 10044/10001 is not allowed to access /tmp owned by uid/gid 0/0 in /usr/local/4admin/apache/vhosts/rutherfordcorner.com/httpdocs/wordpress/wp-admin/includes/file.php on line 628

Warning: unlink() [function.unlink]: SAFE MODE Restriction in effect. The script whose uid/gid is 10044/10001 is not allowed to access /tmp owned by uid/gid 0/0 in /usr/local/4admin/apache/vhosts/rutherfordcorner.com/httpdocs/wordpress/wp-admin/includes/file.php on line 630

    Connection Information
To perform the requested action, connection information is required.

    Hostname
    Username
    Password
    Authentication Keys
    Public Key:
    Private Key:

Enter the location on the server where the keys are located. If a passphrase is needed, enter that in the password field above.
    Connection Type Connection Type FTP

I don't know what I should do from here and I don't know what information is needed for the Hostname, Username, and Password. I assume I will need to change some of my permissions somewhere and for the Hostname, is that my server name, or my website name, I'm completely confused. Thanks in advance to anyone who is willing to help me. Oh and my website is http://www.rutherfordcorner.com/wordpress

I've never seen WP through a SAFE MODE error, but SAFE MODE is a server level configuration value. I don't know if a user can switch it off. You should be able to update through ftp though, if you can't get around the errors.

Thanks for the reply. I just deleted everything and did a manual install of 2.8.4 Worked like a charm. I should have just did that in the beginning, would have saved me a few hours of headache! Now to tweak everything and add my content, hopefully that goes smoothly!

is not allowed to access /tmp

This is a sign that your host has put some rather severe restrictions on software running there. I'd not try to do automatic upgrades from now on, they'll probably always fail.

Upgrade manually instead. It's easy: Upgrading WordPress

Yep, I think I'll stick with the manual upgrade. Worked the first time I tried it, and it really did only take about 5 minutes.
