Well, against my better judgement not to mess with a good thing, I clicked the upgrade automatically button for 3.0.5 from 3.0.4.
All I get on all external and admin pages is "Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute."
After I clicking install, it ran thru the steps but never completed.
I use 1and1.com for my host.
HELP! Down hard.
Don't panic.
Go in via FTP and find the file .maintenance (yes it starts with a period). It'll be in the same folder as your wp-config.php file
Delete that.
Now your site is magically back.
THEN do a manual upgrade.

Ipstenu: Will deleting .maintenance also work with an earlier version? I updated today (I think) to 3.05 from 2.8 (whatever was in vogue 7/2009). The entire blog is gone. It was magical, not. I' very sad.
