What do you mean you cannot delete it? If you go to categories and hover over the name of a category there should be a few links below it to edit, quick edit, or delete it. This is in the latest version of wordpress. It may be different in older versions.

Thanks. I have 2.8 the one right before 2.8.4
There is one category I cannot delete. There is no delete option only Edit or Quick Edit. I remember making this a parent category when I started the blog.
bump! help! Maybe I accidentally deleted something while in Theme Editor?? :(
It looks like you have to have the one category that by default is named 'Uncategorized'. It the default category assigned if no categories are selected. Look in Settings->Writing and you'll a 'Default Post Category' select box. Whatever is selected is the default and is undeletable. I'd guess that it has to do with MySQL joins that grab the categories data.
If you don't want categories, just remove whatever is in your theme that that is displaying them. Then, it doesn't matter that you have the one category.
thank you. what would i delete in which file?
That depends upon what category details/links your theme shows on your site.
thanks esmi. Should I wait until I finalize which theme I will use?
I think the categories display are affected by the coding of themes? Im not going to make a theme from scratch. I will grab a n existing one an tweak it.

Correct. So you need to decide on a theme first and then edit any parts that display category links.
I don't seem to understand what exactly you meant by this statement:
I want to start categories from scratch! And I dont think I need a parent category
The term "parent category" simply means that it is a distinct category and it can take one or more "child categories". Categories are one way of having your posts structured using the WordPress' taxonomies. You can use tags in conjunction with categories or create your own custom taxonomies too. The options are endless. Depends on what exactly you intend to do.
S.K
You cannot delete all the categories.
There must be at least one category, so when you get down to one, it won't let you delete it.
You must log in to post.
