Showing post excerpts instead of full posts

Hey all,

Listen, I’m trying to change my blog from showing the full post to an excerpt so readers have to click on the post title to read the entire post…Should I be adding this modification in function.php or main index template.php or both?…I’ve read the codex on the subject and I understand what its saying to do, but I’m not seeing where to put the modification in my template.
