Hi, I am just getting started after having a blog on wordpress.com for over a year. I understand wordpress.org is much more complicated to set up and since I have no real background in web design, etc., I'm a bit concerned going forward. Even the terminology in the set up instructions assumes a certain amount of knowledge.

What I'm wondering is... tierra.net is my web host and they've always been great and really helpful at tech questions so they've talked me through a few things. But I am now about to install Wordpress on the site and I'm worried it's just over my head. I don't want to pay more money necessarily to switch to another web host but Wordpress.org does make it sound like the web hosts they recommend (Blue Host, Laughing Squid, etc.) have it worked out so that Wordpress.org is extremely easy to install. Is this so? Or should I give it a go doing it myself? Thank you!

Most, if not all, of the recommended hosts make installation a breeze. BlueHost's auto-installer will allow you to install WordPress on any domain, subdomain, folder, etc, that you want to. Once installed, WordPress now has the feature to upgrade the theme built right into it, so you don't have to go out downloading and uploading files. BlueHost will always help you use and install anything through SimpleScripts, too.

The WordPress community tends to be pretty great most of the time, too. If you run into problems, you can always give your configuration and the information in regards to the problems, what happens, what was done to make it happen, etc., and put it into a post here and usually you will receive helpful advice and guidance, but don't let all the help hinder you from advancing and learning yourself, too.

You can still host your wordpress blog with them.

Their prices are a bit on the steep side, but hey if they provide great customer service and always on hand to help then why switch?

Agreed. It really isn't difficult at all to do it yourself. The WordPress instructions show you what to do step by step, and even in these simple things you will learn valuable lessons about FTP and file structures.

Hi , thank you for your responses. I've alway found the forums at Wordpress.com really helpful and so I figured Wordpress.org was the same way. Good to know it is!

I was having a bit of a difficult time figuring it out even referring to the Famous 5 minute install and another "beginner's guide" but thankfully the TierraNet tech people really really walked me through it so now it is set up! I was looking forward to actually learning how to do it and probably should asked the tech guy exactly what he did but I was so happy to have help at that moment! I did get to the point of creating the database and using Filezilla and downloading WP ... maybe I'll learn the full picture another time.

It does seem like even from here on, with the Dashboard in place, there are things that are much more Code-oriented than at wordpress.com so I'm sure I will have many more questions.

And, yes, I do really like Tierra Net -- they are always SO so helpful. I think they may have lowered their prices but I haven't really compared thoroughly other hosts. And I agree... i's true if it works for me, why switch? :)

    So thanks so much!

    You are most welcome.

And now I can see the justification in their prices - a great service to go with it, can't get much better than that these days.

As for future questions, we will always be gald to help in any way we can :)

    Good luck.
