the activity window in macosx truncated the error message from a longer one like
kCFErrorDomainCFNetwork

why doesn't WP just come out and say it that the server is overworked?

Probably because until a salmon is caught and trapped and poked at, there isn't a 'sane' error message written.
Try a manual upgrade?
