301 Moved Permanently ? (8 posts)

Hi, I hope that someone can help out and that I 'make sense' in describing the problem I am having - I'm sure that this just started occuring and is not something that I have not seen before.

I've just recently noticed that posts that I make are not appearing in google searches etc where as earlier they 'popped up' pretty quickly, or certainly within a day etc. I'm a bit clueless where to start, so I thought I'd see what Google Analytics had to say - eg if my site had just simply dropped off their radar for some reason or other. I had a look at what the 'googlebot' had to see and google came back with this :

    HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently
    Date: Tue, 11 May 2010 05:15:15 GMT
    Server: Apache/2.2.14 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.14 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 DAV/2 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 mod_jk/1.2.28
    X-Powered-By: PHP/5.2.11
    X-Pingback: http://www.justonemomentphotography.com.au/xmlrpc.php
    Location: http://www.justonemomentphotography.com.au/
    Content-Length: 0
    Keep-Alive: timeout=5, max=100
    Connection: Keep-Alive
    Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8

Which I don't think is correct with the '301' error. I thought maybe it might be something to do with the company that hosts my wordpress site and asked them, they came back with this:

it would appear your joomla install is simply redirecting access to the xmlrpc file back to the websites main url

this will be a configuration issue within your wordpress install and your best option to identify and resolve this issue is to check over the configuration and refer to the wordpress community forums for assistance with the error, as this is something within the script that is causing this

So, I am a bit stuck as I don't exactly know what to do, or how to go about correcting this.....
The 'only' recent changes I've made is to activate Headspace2 a SEO plugin, and then I de-activated as I couldn't quite follow what to do exactly, so I'm unsure if this is just a coincidence. The theme I'm using is Pro Photo 3 build 648(upgraded from Pro Photo 2) and I'm using WordPress 2.9.2.

    Many thanks in advance .....
    cheers Doug

Warning: Some of the header images on the linked site are NSFW.
(It's always good to mark even artistic partial nudity as NSFW, as some individuals may be more "conservative" than others.)

I wouldn't be concerned about that "error". I don't see any sort of redirection when visiting the xmlrpc.php file at your site, and the googlebot shouldn't be indexing it anyway (which is probably why it's being redirected).

Your search ranking in Google can fluctuate dramatically. I have seen sites drop from #5 to #600 in a matter of days, and I have heard that this can even happen in a matter or hours too. It's best to just do what you can and stop worrying about it, or you'll go insane.

I highly recommend setting up an XML sitemap. It will at least help the googlebot to index your site more efficiently, and it may improve your rank too. Try this plugin:

Whooops, sorry about the image that is in my header! I just didn't stop to think ,,,
Hi, many thanks indeed for taking the time and for helping me out - I just didn't know if I had 'broken' something unwittingly. I'll take your advice and install the sitemap plug-in and I'll alter my image too!
    Much appreciated again.
    cheers Doug

    You're welcome!

You don't need to alter your image. I would consider your photography to be art, and the images that I was referring to are an example of your style for potential customers to see. Just place a warning with the link whenever you can.

    Hi again,
No worries at all. Just to 'prove' how stoopid I actually am, I already did have the sitemap generator installed, and it was working ok (or says it is...) so now I'm still wondering just why the '301' thing appears at all? I guess if it's nothing to worry about, then all is fine - but I kinda figure that it should be saying something like 'HTTP/1.1 200 OK'?

It's not 'just' to get seo listings (though it helps ....) but basically if anything is actually broken and may need fixing before something else goes wrong etc. Hope I make sense ...
    cheers again Doug

It's really nothing to worry about. I think WordPress has a feature that redirects certain bots away from certain files like xmlrpc.php, but I could be wrong. In the long run, you don't want search engines indexing xmlrpc.php as it's only used for password-protected remote access to WordPress' publishing and commenting systems.

Now, if you notice any 301 redirects from actual pages or posts on your blog, that would be a cause for concern.

Ahhhhhhh, ok, thanks, the dim light is beginning to dawn. I just figured the 'xmlrpc' file was like a 'front door' to my blog or something like that. Cheers and many thanks for taking your time to answer and help out, I really appreciate it - Doug
