Options to Create a Comment Subscription System?

I’ve searched the forums and have not been able to find a recent discussion on the alternatives to creating a system whereby our readers can subscribe to comments.

I’ve seen some older discussions of the plug-in Subscribe to Comments.

Is that the best alternative? Are there others?

As a novice at all of this, I’m always a bit cautious about adding stuff to a site that is working for fear I will mess it up. So, any feedback on the alternatives and their “reliability” will be greatly appreciated.
