Removing default category (4 posts)

When I set up my book review blog, I chose as the default category "All Authors and Titles." That category now has 618 entries and will not accept any new entries. I have created two new (separate) categories for Reviews for 2008 and Reviews for 2009, which take about 200 of the reviews, and I no longer need the default since I have complete indexes by author and title.

    1. How do I remove the All Authors and Titles default from the categories section?
    2. If I do remove this default category, will it affect any of the other categories or the index pages?
    3. Must I have a default category at all?

    Thanks. Mary

How do I remove the All Authors and Titles default from the categories section

Why remove it? If it showing up on your sidebar on the public side of the site, it can be hidden quite easily with a minor sidebar edit.

Must I have a default category at all?

Yes. It's defined under Admin/Settings/Writing and will be used if you inadvertently delete a populated category. All posts in the deleted category will go straight to the default category.

I want to remove the default category because it is now full and won't accept any new entries! I have a work-around for this and have opened a couple of new categories to take the new entries.

Is there a way to CHANGE the default? This would also solve the problem. I used to see it when I went to categories, but it's not there anymore, and I can't find it anywhere. The category which is the default no longer has a checkbox beside it. Mary

Has anyone else had a problem like this? Its a wee bit unnerving if true, but I can't figure out why WP should have such a limit.
