My blog (http://avinash.apeshell.net) has been active for a long time. I’ve got somewhere in the region of 40 posts ranging from topics like Astrophysics to Politics to Music. I try to write about what interests me and what is current and is creating hype in the media, and I try to present my opinions factually and accurately try to report whatever I am writing about.

My only problem is getting the word out about my blog. I’ve seen the blogs of famous bloggers whose sites are read daily by thousands of people, and sure, they might have taken years to get to that place, but at the moment, after a couple of months of online time, I get maybe 15 or 20 hits a week, most of which is asking people to check my site out.

How do I get the word out?

I was thinking maybe I could co-author an exisiting blog that is looking for fresh ideas…anybody know one? Or I was thinking that there are other methods where people of common interests can share their sites.

I appreciate and thank in advance all help and advice you give me.

I am sure people are going to suggest better ways of dealing with this, but here’s mine. Find other blogs that you like. Talk to the bloggers. Get friends. Make sure information on your blog interests them so they visit your blog and read it. If they like the information they find, they will quote and credit you. Their visitors will travel to your blog and become visitors. This is the best way, in my opinion.

Write something that people will hunt out, search for and link to. Release a theme, write a plugin, make an interesting design. Do something that makes you stand out from the other 100 million blogs out there.

Rereading what I wrote, it sounds a bit harsh. Just to make clarify things, that was general advice and not directed at you specifically.

Everyone: Thanks for the advice. I checked out the blogs that your usernames were linked to, and was impressed.

ifelse: It was harsh as such, and there’s no harm done.

I find that commenting on other’s blogs and leaving my link there helped a lot in attacting readers. Plus if you belong to a forum, and the fourm allows it, put your link in your signature.

Submitting to Google helps some too. There’s also a forum called bloggerforum.com where you can put up your link and start a link exchange as well.

macmanx link provides the best advice and you will note one thing on that list is comment on other blogs. Not just a few, alot and not just comments. If you write a story related to someone else’s note that other blog in your entry and send a trackback.

In your travels thru the more popular blogs (TTLB is a good source) note how many entries they average. At present you have about 1 1/2 entries per day, the vast majority of the top blogs have from 4 to 10 entries per day. More content, equals more interest and more readers.

Contrary to what you may believe, but being “active for a long time” is not the description I would place on a blog the is little more than two months old. Hang in there, it will get better.

Oops, I didn’t mean “long” time…in relative terms to the amount of readers I have, I would have thought that by now my traffic would have had increased.

I see where you guys are coming from, and want to thank you for the advice.

Just a note – I can’t actually load the page you linked to.

ifelse: That is so true, the only way I ever visit other people’s blogs if they have good content, some guide to do something, or have a plugin/software that I use. Thats how I’ve gotten nearly half of my visitors, with just this one post: Firefox Speed Tweak
