the_meta(); not showing all custom fields – Why not?

    Hello!
    I couldn’t find any documentation in the codex for this, so I thought I would ask.

    The hook, the_meta();, returns custom fields in an unordered list. BUT it only returns custom fields that are created using the “Custom Fields” panel. It will not return custom fields that I create using custom write panels (i.e. using this example).

    Why doesn’t the_meta() return custom meta data created using custom write panels?

    FYI: I am using WordPress 2.8.2.
